Bio-identicals & HRT

In discussing management of hormone deficiencies, it is important to consider two possible treatment options which may be available in addition to nutritional supplements. These include bio-identical hormones and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). However, it is important that you seek advice from your Healthcare Practitioner about the best treatment plan for you.

Bio-identical hormones: natural hormone substances (usually plant-based) which are nearly identical in structure and chemical composition to the hormones your body produces on its own. As bio-identical hormones are so similar to the hormones naturally produced by your body, their effect tends to be more consistent. Bio-identical hormones, such as the three key reproductive hormones, oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone, are all manufactured from a hormone precursor extracted from either soy beans or yams (similar to sweet potatoes).

HRT: in contrast, traditional HRTs use artificial or animal derived hormones. Whilst HRTs were previously used to regulate any decline or loss of oestrogen or testosterone in the body, in recent times, there have been some concerns raised about the potential long-term risks and health consequences for women.
